those are gipiemme pista special (basically a record pista replica) 165 with factory "drilled with holes for speed" chainwheel. late 70's early eighties i guess.

come to think about it, apart from the rims (shitty french wobbles) and tires, the bike is all italian

Yeah, that would be a cool tattoo, Pixel. How does one become a technical illustrator? I bet you don't have to take drawings of hubs to the city over and over to get approved.

For London, I did ride the Purple Turtle, an old Condor, cross frame, single speed with singulator, 26" wheels on 48:16. It was fine.

On the new Condor, Ma Bitch, I ride 48:17 on bigger wheels (are they 27" or 28"). This is quite a long gear, at about 75". Most of the London messengers ride a little lighter, high 60"s, while in Glasgow machismo among the couriers leads to a median length of 80+", despite the many hills.

I should say again, if you are going to be doing any amount of lock & slide, skidding, super-tough urban messengeurilla type riding, avoid the easily divisible numbers like 48 and 16. They are poor for tyre and chain wear. Go for the prime numbers, 37, 41, 43, 47, 17, 19...

garpike, that machineX electric is very cool but $$$$ -- wonder how much just the motor kit will be?

There are four motor kits ranging from $1000 to $2500. The $1000 kit is the same as the bike pictured above. It works with most bikes. I am thinking of dusting off my old steel mountain bike frame. If I commute with it, $1000 pays for itself in gas in less than a year.

buy a moped you sellout! hahaha

I was thinking the other day that when I travel to California, riding bikes with garpike will be high on my list of things to do.

Hi everyone, I'm Stacey from NYCBikes, and new to the forum.

We'd like to invite everyone (especially families) to out first annual NYCBikes Halloween Family Ride. Sunday 10.29, 9am at our shop at 140 Havemeyer in Williamsburg. We’ll have bagels, coffee, juice, gobblins and ghouls. We’re going to head out around 10am, cross the bridge and make our way to Rockefeller Park, a really fun playground on the Hudson (Will's daughter Winnie will be trying out her Halloween costume).

It’s the perfect opportunity to get outside for a ride and meet some fiendish new friends.* For more info visit our website at nycbikes.com/ghoulride.

thanks!

stacey

Sheldon Brown's bicycle site has all one could want to know about anything bicycle. His gear length calculator will tell you what length gear you are riding.

For London:
The length you choose will depend on your riding style.
If you intend to ride brakeless aim for something under 70" (75 max).

this one's about 70"

this one's about 75" on a 39T front cog

this one's now broken

Speaking of purple, you gotta love the 4" tires on the Surly Pug:

I WANT one! After I get that electric bike. And after I build a frame. And after I build this ukele kit.

Finding NEMO...

New wheelset 700c non-machined deep v's laced to 5-star gold hubs, gold izumi track chain, rolls saddle, chopped riser bars, oury grips, bontrager mtb clips and 46:15 ratio

Feb 13, 07 10:21 pm  ·

careful on the skids, you'll pull out of those if you're not careful!

5-star hubs? the campy sheriff badge ones or are these different? I didn't think campy had them in gold.

Pixel,

I can't afford Campy hubs man! They're Milwaukee 5-Star hubs, which are a huge step up from what I used to have and are comparable to the Surly Track hubs or the Miche hubs.

High flange 32 H and gold.

Eventually, I'll do a Phil Wood buildup, but for now, it's fine...

As far the the clips are concerned, I've found if your right clip is ultra tight, it won't come unclipped.

I've had these on for quite some time. Pulled them off my old bike...

I'll throw the pedals and toeclips back on this summer.

Feb 15, 07 10:30 am  ·
 ·

ahhh, gotcha on the hubs, although Miche hubs are a step above the Surly track. You can still find the Suzue ProMax in gold, I love those hubs.

Mavic Open Pros are my candy of choice. I have a pair laced to a pair of ProMax SBs and a pair of Formulas. I don't mind Deep V's on someone else's bike, but not on mine. I'm starting to think a Bare Knuckle is in my near future.

Bareknuckles are nice, but I want one of these puppies!

The reality is that they're only making 12 "bmx-inspired" track bikes... My next frame will probably be an Anchor

here's my peugeot fixed gear conversion (with the sissy e-brake) hand built from scratch by my amazing lady. xmas 2006!

Yeah, I've seen the pics of the Trackstar rig, its hot but I don't know how I would feel about riding that thing daily. Oh, and this year EAI is adding lime green to the selection of Bareknuckle colors! They're great frames if you can get a deal on them. I want something that will be dual purpose: road and track, so thats for me.

And Anchors/Bridgestone frames are hot, hands down.

And yes I was concentrating hard as I just got the no handed trackstand down that day, and I had people walking around me so I had to control how much I was drifting in that hall.

Israel, big ups on the peugeot. I used to have a few of those and they are lovely bikes [minus the french-threaded bottom brackets!]...

Didn't bareknuckle also add purple as a color too? I really like those frames. Simple, clean and cheap for an entry-level TRACK frame [track meaning you could ride it in a velodrome and not look like a posuer - bianchis, iros, ect]

Man, I was only kidding about the Anchor frameset. I ain't got 4g's sitting around!

I was doing trackstands in my livingroom last week. My girlfriend was freaking out about me breaking something...

Monstertrack tomorrow... So excited. Second year riding in it.

Monster track 8 was a blast Pixel. 3 Manifests icy, salty roads.

A cop pulled me over for running a red light. Luckily I still have my NC license, so I told him I was in from out of town and was riding around with my friend. When he said he was going to write me a $150 ticket, I told him I wasn't aware it was illegal to blow through a redlight in Union Square.

Dude, let me go...

look at that chainline...

Kinda funny.

We did alright, let some out-of-towners tag along with us which slowed us down a bit and I had one of the worst leg cramps in my life on 2nd ave on manifest 2 [too much beer the night before], but we had fun.

the real question, Prolly, is do you do barspins with your risers? Jack up the stem and give it a go, my Angus has clearance and its a shitload of fun.

Feb 21, 07 10:51 pm  ·
 ·

and if you weren't listening to Bolt Thrower, it isn't brutal enough!

actually I saw a pretty good show this weekend and one of the bands was Architect, which I found immensely amusing. didn't have enough cash on me for a T-shirt though...

Feb 21, 07 10:55 pm  ·

Yes I do wheelies with bar spins son. Pedal clearance is the main issue. Found out the hardway the first time. Throwin my pedals and toeclips back on once it's warmer out.

I got a few images of handless trackstand bunnyhops...

Bolt Thrower's insane live - Midevil Sword fighting and 'ish.... I prefer Emperor or Gogoroth. Bands that are about some real black metal. They freakin burned down churches!. Architect's a bad ass band. Mouth of the Architect is better though!
