Nanshan Waterworks and Urban Park

This is an international design competition for an Underground wastewater treatment plant with a public park and research center,  the competitors include Isozaki, SOM, Aecom, and other famous design companies, I worked as a freelance and key designer for a design institute in China.

  1. The site is in a metropolitan in southern China and has a humid and hot climate. It was originally a delta wetland with a dense water network, where the river goes to the sea,
  2. The existing ground sewage treatment plant, is located between the elevated highway and CBD, the customer requested that the wastewater treatment plant be relocated from above ground to underground, and the ground space became a public park and research center of the city.
  3. The design hopes to restore the staggering landscape of the delta's outfall, the hills surrounded by the winding water system, and achieve earthwork balance, while also increasing the thickness of the planting cover, making the site a wetland mangrove forest in a high-density city.
  4. Sports fields and small squares are arranged between streams and woods, connecting them with bicycle paths and walking paths, while at the same time, through ramps, building setbacks, and roof gardens, the green landscape is extended vertically, connecting the grounds, landscapes, and buildings into an organic green symbiote.
  5. The high-rise buildings are located on the edge of the site to avoid the main water storage and treatment space of the sewage treatment plant. The massing of the building gradually changes from high to low in the middle of the site, resulting in a rich roof space, forming a new type of community, rather than a few iconic high-rise buildings.
  6. The building façade highlights the horizontal balcony, and the outdoor stairs are used to connect the balconies between the floors, breaking the barrier between the floors. In order to cope with the humid and hot climate, the building adopts an external drip irrigation pipe on the façade and uses the process products of the water treatment plant to reduce the humidity and temperature of the building surface, while irrigating the high-rise greening platform and reducing the energy consumption of the building. These drip pipes can also be an architectural expression or implication of water treatment plants underground.
  7. The stadium and community center buildings at the center of the site use slopes to surround the stadium and public areas of the center, allowing citizens to watch and participate in the activities taking place inside the building while strolling, and the design makes the building the center of the surrounding urban by encouraging this informally engaged interaction. The building's sloping roof creates a good outdoor gathering and amphitheater, where the protruding roof creates a good dialogue with the distant mountains.
