Hybrid Housing

Since the site is adjacent to the Rhode Island Hospital and the Community College of Rhode Island, the potential residents are the patients and students where they can gain some art experience for rehabilitation and education purpose.

Compared to the conventional mixed-use residence, the Hybrid-Housing is more strongly integrated with the public programs for the Arts. Instead of the simple “stacked” relationship between the public and private, this Housing maximizes the chance to acquire art experience in daily lives as the residents would have to pass through the Galleries to enter their units.

The exposure to the arts is not limited to entering the units but extended to viewing the artworks inside the units. While each of the 17ft high Galleries functions as lobby, the roof of the single story residence may be the outdoor exhibition area.
