Web: Plane

Web is a product of simple rules within a geometric frame that creates a complex and elegant unified object in the form of a potential installation. The idea is to combine an array of individual parts to create a seamless form. Density and scale varies based on the specific application and materiality: foam, three-dimensional plastic printing, rockite, concrete, metal-work, or digital.

TILE

The first rule consists of setting up a primitive geometric shape that could easily be repeated and to act as the base guide parameter: a pentagon. Second, a curvilinear line is created wrapping two of the five sides of the shape; followed by a third that is flipped to the outer direction.

Specifying a corner condition is crucial to the scheme. Hence, the line is mirrored across - creating the first tile. The edge of the tile is arrayed on a rotation of seventy-two degrees to match the pentagon guide. Once the initial set is complete, another set of line-work is placed at its end. This process is replicated numerous times.

THREE-DIMENSIONAL

However, the resulting pattern is not the desired product. Therefore, the original tile is given thickness, as well as move movement in the third dimension (up and down), in the same fashion as how the ‘S’ curve is made; introducing a new layer of density to the overall framework.

DISCOVERIES

The rustling expanded pattern is quite extraordinary. As the pattern extends, new patterns emerge - resulting in infinite possibilities. Pockets of patterns are created mostly of radial arrangements. Visually, there are two constants:

(1) every detail is mirrored along the five datum lines of the edges of the pentagonal guide;

(2) the center point distinctively stands out, juxtaposed to its context. As well as resembling more of a rectalinear characteristics resembling the pentagon.

Another quite unique feature is a star based shape appearing on the outer shell of the center - where the pattern is initially created.
