Green Consulting...

...is going away?

This was a safe harbor at the beginning of the recession for architects to get involved in. Several of the green consulting firms I know of have had recent layoffs or totally closed shop.

With so many architects now APs and touting sustainability skills, no one hires these green consulting firms. Even owners are becoming savvy enough to not see the need. "LEED AP" will even lose its value since sustainable design is, and should have always been, part of standard design.

Apparently, at the dawn of ADA in the 90s there were dozens of consultants available to verify ramp slope and toilet layout. Where are they now? Gone. So is anybody out there still considering a safe business venture?

I agree that the business model a few years ago is most likely outdated. A service though that could still be viable is helping an owner and or architect navigate the muddy and confusing waters of government and/or public utilities grants for sustainable designs. There is money out there, but it is not all that easy to find.
