Good riddance. While I disagree with McCain and Huckabee on almost every issue, I think they're both half-decent people who each have some shred of principle to stand on, and they each have a good sense of humor. Romney seemed like a plastic android who shamelessly pandered to whoever he happened to be standing in front of.

There goes the only candidate that will change America for the better. Thanks to Huckabee and McCain collussion.

Welcome to Eurosocialism in the next 4-8 years.

Good thing Romney HINTED at coming back later, like Reagan. But by then, it's likely too late for America.

I'm starting to believe the 2012 Mayan predictions that something profound will happen to the earth by then. Maybe not the complete end of the world, but damned near close.

My prediction:

The democrats will take the White House, destroy America's culture, China will eclipse us economically, we will retreat from jihadists and they will start attacking America at home, we will likley become very close to establishing a North American Union or similar, and the dollar will be obsolute...something like the Amero will crop up.... and we will slip into the welfare state, the twisted demographic nightmare that Europe has been trying to run away from...

God help us.

...and what's with all this bashing about him using his own money to assist his campaign? Since when is that a bad thing? The guy is a self-made millionaire, who worked hard and made money. Good for him. The fact that he's not leaching funds from the government or others to pursue his ambissions, should be applauded...and he has had plenty of contributions to support his campaign. What's wrong with you people? He's rich. Get over it.

What a bunch of commies.

Romney's self-made millions couldn't buy him the presidency, and people didn't vote for him because his smarmy CEO persona reminds them of the manager who laid them off before taking a ski trip to Aspen.

Get over it.

I'm just pretty sure his decision to withdraw had powerful economic underpinnings, since he wasn't likely to be able to raise much in the way of additional campaign contributions after Tuesday.

I don't see why McCain and Huckabee would collude to get Romney out. Romney was helping McCain by splitting the far right of the party w/ Huckabee.

How am I showing a lack of patriotism by challenging your - another American's - views of the country, futurist? How am I misunderstanding the constitution when I don't want to see the country run on Christian fundamentalist principles?

PS I think I've said last time I challenged your views that I am a Christian - so don't go calling me godless and think it will stick.

I'm with j.....the kids were probably annoyed that he was spending their inheritance.

And yes, McCain and Huckabee teamed up in West Virginia. McCain stopped campaigning there and let Huck have it. Smart move on their part, and good for them, because they saved us from looking at him anymore.

I'd like to know what about Romney people even like. Is it that he's disingenuous, and able to lie through his teeth, just like GWB? Or is it the fact that he's a robot? I personally like how's he's taken different stances on his positions depending on what part of the country he's in. Oh, and I like this statement too:

"If I fight on in my campaign, all the way to the convention, I would forestall the launch of a national campaign and make it more likely that Senator Clinton or Obama would win. And in this time of war, I simply cannot let my campaign, be a part of aiding a surrender to terror."

Such character! Such integrity! Just like the first 6 years of GWB all over again.

Good riddance!

PS. I have to hand it to him, his house looks nice at least.

House A: Mike Huckabee's Little Rock 5,124-sq.-ft. home.

House B: John McCain's 2-unit Phoenix condominium (he also has an Oak Tree ranch profiled on HGTV).

House C: Hillary Clinton's Westchester 5BR, 5,200-sq.-ft. Dutch Colonial.

House D: Barack Obama's 3-story, 96-yr-old South Side Georgian.

House E: Mitt Romney's Lake Winnipesaukee 6BR 5,400-square-foot contemporary.

futurist, that's three calm and logical questions I've asked of you (the other, not on this thread, being "Why should the federal government care if I marry a man or a woman, as long as once I do I pay my taxes at the married rate?") and you are incapable of answering with calm, logical responses. I heard on my radio the other day that Canadians think that Romney looks like an American president, as cast in a movie made by Canadians. Hilarious 'cause it's true.

Otherwise, I have to say that the more I learn about your voting system (and my own, actually), the more I realize how absolutely messed up it all is.

I'd like to know what about Romney people even like.

Well, I think the economic conservative wing of the republican party bit their tounge and supported him because he was their only mainstream option.

Huckabee is not a traditional conservative. He raised taxes in AR and that's a big no no for the party base. Not sure where everyone gets the idea Huck's conservative. Being pro-life does not make you a conservative, but it has made many religious moderates republicans.

McCain is nothing more than a pro-war moderate. Hard line republicans hate how he works "across the aisle" with the dems on bills...mccain feingold anyone? He's also far from fiscally conservative. Voted against Bush tax cuts, etc. Soft on immigration. There's a laundry list why republicans don't like him.

Ron Paul is by far the only economic conservative in the race. But, he's against the Iraq war. Actually his platform is for a more agressive pullout than even Hillary or Obama are calling for. That's poision for the war on terror faction of the republican party.

Many people say Paul is just a libertarian running as a republican. Possibly some truth behind that and if the republican party fractures with McCain as the soon-to-be defacto leader I think the libertarians might finally emerge as a viable 3rd party given the support Paul is getting.

futurist screams about socalism from the dems, but assuming he supports Bush, what does he have to say about the massive big gov't programs enacted in the past 7 years? Medicare Presciption Drug Benefit...Dept. of Homeland Security...No Child Left Behind...etc. We've gone further down the road of european socalism under Bush's watch than under Bill's in the 90's. If it weren't for the Iraq War and some tax cuts I'd expect democrats to love Bush because he sure hasn't acted like a republican at all, at least when it comes to domestic policy. Actually it took the '06 elections for Bush to get tough on some republican principles, but too late now to do anything.

And because of that I traditionally vote 3rd party. I'm very cynical that any mainstream canidates would do anything much different from the next. In 1932 everyone voted in FDR thinking here's a guy that's going to give us sweeping changes, when in reality he more or less adopted Hoovers depression strategy and made it more aggressive. And what happend, the country fell further into the great depression hole. Historically I'd say only Abe Lincoln really presided over change, but we all know that was a little different than what we have now.

What I'm saying is the whole election is 99% hype. All the canidates that actually would make a difference are drummed out of the mainstream and we end up with the plastic canidates.

the difference being (IMHO) that Obama is "Bisphenol-A free" acrylic made here in the good 'ol US of A and won't cause ADHD and Autism, whereas all the others are made from cheap, chinese made cut-rate plastic specially coated in lead and designed for the american citizenry specifically to increase neurological dysfunction.

This is a good thread so far...

a few comments...

I constantly hear conservatives on the 'nect talking about European socialism as the most unholy of conclusions. However, a quick look at basic quality of life statistics show that even though the US is hundreds of times more wealthy, we lag behind "European socialist" countries in almost ever category... this puzzles me.

As far indoctrination goes, it seems that only hardline/radical conservatives like futurist go so far as to tie capitalism inextricably to democracy.
Socialist democracies run on capitalist systems all over the world. Democracy doesn't require free markets, free markets dont require democracy.

Brings up an interesting potential comparsion, Apurimac... given that, if elected, he by default inherits the war, Obama and Bush would compare extraordinarily similarly, if lined up side by side, wouldn't they...
Hmm...
