April 27th   (rsvp by April 24)

The UIC School of Architecture presents the inaugural Garofalo Symposium, a conversation about Doug Garofalo's work and the launching point for a wider discussion of Doug's influence on the discipline, profession, and teaching of architecture. The Symposium gathers friends, colleagues, and the public together to reflect on Doug's contributions and speculate on the lasting intellectual legacy of selected projects from throughout his career. The Garofalo Symposium is one of many related events planned for 2012–2013, including the search for an initial Garofalo Fellow, a young practitioner who will teach and conduct design research through an endowed, year-long appointment at the School of Architecture.

    Doug Garofalo, FAIA
For almost twenty-five years of full-time teaching and professional practice, Doug Garofalo (1958–2011) was at the forefront of introducing advanced digital and conceptual models to architectural design and education. Garofalo began his teaching career at the UIC School of Architecture in 1987, moving through all faculty ranks from part-time adjunct to tenured full professor and serving as Interim Director from 2001 to 2003. Extensively published and exhibited, Doug was a recent recipient of the highly prized United States Artist Fellowship, and in 2009 was named a UIC University Scholar, the first time in twenty-six years that a member of the School of Architecture was so honored.
