In The Sustainable City, Steven Cohen, executive director of Columbia University's Earth Institute, provides a broad and engaging overview of the urban systems of the 21st century, surveying policies and projects already under way in cities around the world and pointing to ways that the urban infrastructure of the future--renewable energy, energy efficiency, mass and personal transit, and advanced waste management--can be improved.
Towards Openness Book Launch, NEW INC. | February 21
Li Hu and Huang Wenjing of OPEN Architecture will introduce their new book Towards Openness and discuss their firm's current work. Using OPEN Architecture’s projects as case studies, Towards Openness is a symphony of seven built projects and six idea chapters that are interestingly interwoven to offer an in-depth examination of OPEN’s unique practice and the critical thinking underlying its work.
Emre Arolat: Scent of the Trace | February 21
As part of the Architectural League's Current Work lecture series, architect Emre Arolat will discuss projects including the Santral Istanbul (a disused power plant converted into a center for art and education), the Raif Dinckok Cultural Center (a design that links separate structures with a perforated steel skin), the Sancaklar Mosque, and more.
Sonic Arcade: Shaping Space with Sound | Closing on February 25
“Sonic Arcade: Shaping Space with Sound” is a multi-component exhibition featuring interactive installations, immersive environments, and performing objects that explore how the ephemeral and abstract nature of sound is made material.
