Sanam Salek (26) - MArch I - First year Graduate at School of Design, University of Pennsylvania
Brief background/experiences I have had no previous architectural experience before starting at UPenn so I think I have a unique perspective on architecture school and architecture in general. I received a bachelors degree from UCSB in both Fine Arts and Mathematics in 2003. I spent the next three years as an Advertising executive in Los Angeles with a "great life", having a high paying salary, an office, and two assistance. I hated it. I quit and spent the next two years traveling Europe, making art, and exhibiting my work in galleries in London.
Why you chose your school/program It was between UPenn and Sci-Arc. I figured that I spent most of my life with one foot in the art world and my head in the clouds. I heard that UPenn was really rigorous and structured, with a heavy emphasis in technology. I decided that I needed a change of pace and needed some rigor in my life. Thus, UPenn.
Architecture interests To be honest, I can't say. I am really a blank canvas. Everything about architecture interests me, but more so the fact that architecture is like an umbrella that covers other disciplines of design and that I will be able to do anything once I graduate from school. I am mostly interested in the architecture of clothes at the moment. I love the idea of constructing a skin for a human body and I think that the person who I look to most for inspiration is Gareth Pugh.
