Kyle Jenkins (30) - M. Arch I, 1st year at Cornell University
Brief background/experiences I received a B.A. in Liberal Arts from The Evergreen State College in 1999. In the ensuing years I've made a priority of gaining exposure to a broad set of skills and experiences - visual arts and design, furniture making, farming, cheese making, teaching, coffee, etc. My aim has been, simply put, to generalize before specializing.
Why you chose your school/program Looking into schools last year, I considered a variety of programs--some more theory-oriented and others more practical, a few arts schools and some larger universities. There are, clearly, advantages in each; I chose Cornell for a number of reasons. The program is small (my cohort is 13), yet has access to plentiful resources and is situated within a large, vigorous university. Coming from a small school, that was an important consideration.
Additionally, the program is still rather new, and as such, light on its feet. The mercurial nature of the field, likewise the constantly shifting demands on emerging architects, would seem to make flexibility in a program important.
Most importantly, though, was the high level of discourse and inquiry at Cornell, and the room to interrogate the field outside of a narrowly-defined pedagogy.
Architecture interests I'm interested in social organization and corresponding political/economic realities, and see architecture as an invigorating means to explore this. The field occupies a unique juncture of many other lines of inquiry, yet takes embodied form in practice. I appreciate the conjectural and applied aspects of architecture. I also have a strong interest in design, form, and aesthetics.
Other interests Photography, literature, economics, travel, language, film, history, banter.
