Architectural Association (Kirk)
[AAPhD] Kia ora / Hello

Dawn over my London flat brings me another day closer to that once unfathomable task of completing my PhD. Yes, after nearly three years of hard slog (four, if you count the MA (Histories and Theories) that I did to kick-start it all), each day no longer feels like another scratch in the wall. There is light at the end of that tunnel after all…

But, dramatics aside, I figured that some random musings on my final year of the PhD might nicely balance Phil’s first-year blog at UPenn (unfortunately, the only other PhD blog on the Archinect School Blog Project… hopefully more are waiting in the wings). What this blog may lack in eye candy, will hopefully be made up for with regular updates on what’s happening at the AA; its ever-evolving and expanding PhD programme (it’s not yet officially publicised, but the 2009/10 year will see the start of the PhD in Architectural Design programme); my own trials, tribulations and titillations (past, present and immediate future); and random thoughts and experiences on archi-related stuff. There’s a bit of biographical info here, too, if you’re interested. And by all means, feel free to comment, suggest, heckle or enquire into anything PhD or AA related and I’ll be more than willing to put in my two cents/pence worth (they’re about the same value now, anyway ; )

As this is my first ever blog, expect a few hiccups along the way, but I’ll keep the posts coming and we’ll see what happens…

Cheers.
welcome kirk... looking forward to reading about your phd experience... it will be interesting to see how it differs from upenn.

Thanks, Phil.
As it happens, my director of studies, Marina Lathouri, graduated in 2005 with her PhD from UPenn. Small world.

Welcome .... several graduates of the AA's MA (H+T) program are in my PhD program. A smart lot, as they say!

G'day Kirk,

Good to see a blog from a fellow NZ'er. Any others at the AA? All the best - I will definitely follow your blog.

Hi diabase,
Not many, if any. Though one was teaching in the MA (H&T) programme until recently. The exchange rate is tough - you really need a job over here to make it work. This past year was the first in four that I didn't work part-time in an office to cover the difference b/w scholarships NZ$-to-£. But I can still afford eat and pay for an internet connection, so can't complain.

architphil,
So dissertations aren't just library dust collectors after all? Nice to hear.
