While orientation begins tomorrow morning, classes do not officially start until next week. What better way to begin than with an introduction to George Gund Hall, the building that houses the Graduate School of Design?

Completed in 1969, Gund was designed by John Andrews to house the design school's three departments. It's comprised of four trays which step back to create one contiguous studio space underneath a large glass roof spanning 134 feet over four levels. While it may look nice in pictures, rumor has it that this leaves the studio hot in spring and freezing in winter. As an added bonus, it leaks. The ground floor houses the usual assortment of auditorium and seminar rooms in addition to the Loeb Library. The basement has an assortment of shop facilities including a woodshop, 3 laser cutters, 3D printer, 3-axis mill, and 3-axis CNC bed. There's also a mysterious lone shower stall in the men's bathroom for those seriously long charettes.
