Hello there, recently, I have received a mapping project in my second year studies. I have been tasked with doing a mapping regarding textures on the site. The site is known as Advocate Close, located in Royal Mile, Edinburgh. I have been thinking about this mapping project for the past few days but still couldn't manage to think of any useful texture mapping except to make connection between the organic and non-organic materials on the site. Even that is quite vague and not a very substantial analysis. It will be helpful if someone will be able to provide some insight or advice regarding my investigation. Thank you!

Thinking of the project as a list of categorical terms might help. So organic/nonorganic is one, but also mapping the size of textures-the dimensions of pavers and cladding or the smoothness of glass against the depth of rough stone. Other simple categories could be hardness/softness, warmth/coldness, welcoming/discouraging. Texture could be thought of in larger scales as well - the rhythm of street furniture along a sidewalk, the texture of openings or clear ways against solid building and locked doorways.

You'll get better results if you don't try to find one set of connections to map everything to -you won't be able to be specific enough, or you would need dozens of categories- but by making a series of many generalized connections you will be able see the specificity of textures in the combination and overlay of maps.
