I was 27...took a few years to work for the firm because I came out of undergrad with no debt and didn't want to sell my condo to pay for my graduate school.

entered this fall at 26 - took some time off to make a dent in my undergrad debt - working was probably the best thing i could have done not simply because it made me question whether i wanted to do it - but because it give me so much "material" to work from. Having a sense of how architecture is made, why its made, and what rules drive its development gives me a perspective to explore ideas i wouldn't have considered previously. Working, I expected to learn how to put a building together and what I learned along with constructing is why and how buildings are shaped, made, produced.

started at 21. right after finishing a bachelor's in cognitive science..

youngest person in my class.

finished at 24.

i sort of disagree with working in architecture before going to get an M.Arch, especially if you have a degree in something other than architecture. it's just extra baggage to carry with you through 3 years of studios.

Wheeze ... I obtained my B. Arch at age 23. Other than my MBA, it's been the only architectural degree I've needed lo these past 35 years, 33 of which I've spent as a licensed architect.

5-year b.a. arch in '99
started my MFA at cranbrook this year..i'm 33...

and i think those that attend grad school should be older than 27ish.... the younger heads still act like it's undergrad and i think the time off between undergrad and grad will help with your focus in grad school..... unless you want to do the same b.s. you did in undergrad..

@rverk.ini

Just curious, but why the switch?

I have the (possibly mistaken) assumption that people in the video game industry are highly compensated for their work.

No mistake - i wish it was

At the time I did this switch I thought(wish I would have a crystal Ball then) A way to apply all I knew in 3D design to architecture. I was able to develop ways of applying 3D modeling methodology to programmatic analysis and generative design which lead to BIM. It all worked out except for the 50% pay cut to change professions. It's too bad that architects have to do so much in preparation, and hold vastly greater responsibility than video game artists, and yet only make at most 50% of what game 3D artists make with far less job security. Why is that? well it's a ratio of supply and demand there are far more talented architect candidates/seat than 3D video game artist candidates/seat. Anyway I am in architecture to stay - it's become my "Afganistan war" and I must "stay the course"

Geezer representin'! I'm 39.

I'm also new to the archinect forums. I'm looking at M.Arch programs but am realizing that my math major and lack of legitimate portfolio appear to be quite a hindrance. All I really have are some drawings from an intro to drawing class I took about a year ago. I guess if I'm serious about this I have a few more pre-reqs to take just to compile a competitive portfolio.

So it looks like I'm probably still another year away...which would make me a 40-year old applicant.

At 22, I was one of the youngest people in my class.

I am applying for my PhD this year...I don't think that there is an average age for that. I would like to teach, so my M.Arch will definitely help me with my application to my PhD. And I am working on getting my license too.
