i'm gonna be starting my thesis pretty soon and i have some ideas for what i want to do, but i was wondering if anyone who has already gone through the whole thesis process could tell me how they went about narrowing down their choices/ideas...
and also whether it is better to have an innovative idea for a "space/place" or an innovative design...(ideally, both), but any ideas would be appreciated...
for example, to do a museum which is an idea that has been done before and have it be innovative in its design features
or to do a center for parkinsons disease which is not somehting that is done often...
redevelop detroit......... like it hasnt been tried a few times...
design a light weight bullet proof vest that a break dancer can wear and still be able to to the robot while sippin' on colt 45 next to a plane with fukin' snakes and runs on diesal gas with 40% nitrus link to a bio cuppler turbo waste gate used for time travel to visit your man arnold in running man
it is harder to to find ideas for a thesis from other people who don't have any real knowledge of where you are, how much exposure, knowledge and experience you have had in different spheres. These things as well as other more natural dispositions influence you subject position which in turn determine the things that interest you.
You must ask yourself what it is you are interested in. Within that, you can search from your experience what issues or problems you encountered that beg for interventions or critique. When you narrow it down to this level, then you can do a research on what has been done. After that you may find that there is a way that you can explore the issue.
Think small as well (i.e. doors and windows) A thesis does not have to be about big things only.
Music school for the deaf OR Art Museum for the blind...
Seriously though - your thesis should involve something else that you're interested in other than art or architecture. One of my studio mates was really into martial arts, so his thesis was a dojo / martial arts training facility. He had a blast working on it all year and never got burned out. He ended up with a pretty sweet project by the time final crits rolled around.
dml - reminds me of when i used to live near a school for the blind, I know it's not p/c, but it did giggle a bit to myself when i saw people driving in and out.
morph - why would you bother asking what you should do for a thesis on a thread like this? Not to sound cold, but by the time you're doind thises you should know what you want to be concentrating on. I do like dml's suggestion of doing something you have an interest in outside of studio to keep you interested tho.
If you end up doing the porn shop, let me know how it turns out
I'm sorry but I am so weary of the idea that a "good" thesis topic begins with "I want to design building type x".
a TRUE thesis begins with a question, then taking a critical position in response to that question, then answering that question with your architectural design project.
Your thesis should seek out a topic you are interested in, and your research should support your pursuit of knowledge about the topic or issue you are proposing to address with design.
I never let my grad students begin with "I want to design a museum" and then spend the semester trying to find theoretical justification for designing a museum. This method results in a pretty weak thesis, or just a big design project.
Do yourself a favor and stop thinking about the building and start trying to find a critical position in relationship to an architectural issue.
Or, design a space based on the turduken b/c that would be sweet...

did you want us to do your thesis for you too? $500.
$450
hell, i graduated in '91, but i'd probably hire blackharp to redo my thesis project just for fun for $450. that's cheap.
send me a portfolio blackharp. if i like it, i'll send you the document/brief.
[ ^^ kidding. though, if i had $450 to throw around...]
