Why always $100?

"This competition combines Global Green USA’s commitment to green affordable housing, sustainable cities, and climate solutions that work for communities, with Brad Pitt’s passion for intelligent architecture."

Maybe they could combine their broad vision with Brad Pitt's bank account to subsidize the competition? I'd be glad to donate my time and ideas, but not necessarily my money. Though my favorite idea would be to donate money to relocate families farther inland and turn NOLA into a wetlands, so maybe it's a wash?

Does anyone have a copy of the competition brief to post? I'd like to learn more about the competition before I spend $100....

Gee Romans , now you think a real artist shuld own the 100 and be stupid enough to throw money after doing the world a faviour.

Realy have real artists Ever had enough pocked money to buy their own materials ?????????????????????????????????????????????

Do you realy xpect the fried birds to come flying , all propelled by stupid wannabee's , Gee how stupid can Romans be --- realy they rather shuld go buy themself some 3D-H.

Yeah, the attitude of "give us your money and THEN we'll tell you what the submission requirements are" is discouraging. What if I sign up alone and then realize that I need to submit four A1-size boards?

Exactly then it is better acturly creating a beautifull design -- say heck with the conventions , let's make a nice house this time _with computers, do the thing use it yourself ............. No "competition" I recall ever brought the perfect building structure prepared for rebuild ,none I recall took use of computers except for rendering porpus, Gee architecture shuld be about creating and having a nice time doing nice things well there is a method, it work with computers and you could even do it with a projector and a jigsaw.

We support 3D-H wholeheartedly. We all know as architects that when the glorious day comes when 3D-H is integrated by software with IBC, ADAAG, and BOMA all the design community at large will stand up and take notice to our architectural leadership. It is this standardization that will provide all architects the ability to provide a single standardized product that will provide huge dividends to both architect and client. We must all take advantage of these opportunities of professional standardization, teach the younger architects the proper method of sound standardization and business practices, and develop a greater base of AIA membership for the furtherment of our profession and community. This is an easy task that we all can adhere to, let's make it happen, we all know we can!!!

Can we please keep this thread on the topic of the competition? I am curious to know how many people are going to register. I would like to but am also hesitant with the $100 fee. But it looks really interesting. You know we would probably meet Brad Pitt if we won, too.

Where's liberty bell?!? lb, wanna do the competition with me? :o)

the overview states pretty clearly what the two stage challenges are. your money could be worse spent. sounds like a great competition.

I am sorry about the '$100 Trend' style competitions.
Specifically those that are aimed at environmental & humanitarian causes.(Greenstop, BCA Plaza, etc.)
It would also be more sustainable to upload images and reduce the fees of printing and shipping).
**Then have the winning and honorable mentions printed for exhibition...

One would question if the organizers would consider reducing the fee to encourage more entries...more ideas...

I've been eyeing this one also.

I, too, balked at the idea of blindly submitting $100 without knowing the whole proposition. The materials posted are informative, they are just so far incomplete. Since I would be operating solo, I am especially hesitant to proceed without knowing the submission requirements -- This could be a deal-breaker. Otherwise, the Phase 1 program of apartments and child care seems straightforward enough.

If there is anyone who has already registered, feel free to let us know the submission reqs, and I'm in for about (50) posts on this thread for the summer...

I decided to go for it... only to be thwarted by their link to their PayPal webpage. I have a current account, yet it's asking for an ADDITIONAL card.

Has anyone else experienced this, or am I just lucky?

we'll see.

so... has anyone signed up?

we might today or this weekend...just to get started during the long weekend...

i'll fill in any info if it hits any bumps like Metaphoracle...

Raj,

Please post the general scope and requirements if you decide to enter the competition. I really do want to know if they require some crazy amount of info and printed boards. I plan on entering myself and cannot afford the time or money involved in submitting 4 mounted ARCH D sized boards. You know?

Thanks

I'm sure Brad is reading this thread... perhaps he could shed some light. Or prompt one of his Global Green colleagues to...

unless Global Green is working with specific residents and actually building the 'winning scheme' I'm not sure what this competition will achieve. In a post-disaster situation you play a very thin line in raising expectations with projects that have community participation.

Here are the questions I'd be asking.

Who is on the jury?
Where are funds being used? 1000 entries = $1,000,000 - $50K in prizes = $950,000
Is two months long enough?
How many stage II finalists are there?

ps. I doubt Brad is reading this thread but the Global Green staff will be.

Cameron - I won't go into detail because I'm not sure if I can, but I believe there is a specific group of residents involved since there are planned community charrettes and a specific site. Also, I would do that math again.

May 26, 06 3:22 pm  ·
 ·
Philarch

Also, even though they have a certain community and site in mind, I believe Global Green USA's goal is to use it as a model for rebuilding New Orleans with sustainable design in mind. Even if a physical building is not created, I believe this can be beneficial in the long run.

May 26, 06 3:31 pm  ·

Cameron

yeah... 2 days of no sleep doesn't help with maths. make that $100,000.

I know the designboom comp. just had 4200 entries so who knows. Hopefully GG is working with more than just the PRC.

Don't get me wrong, I'm optimistic for the competition - I'd like to see it progress beyond just an exhibit and publication.

I agree. Unless there are New Orleanians on the jury and there is a clear path for this to built (not smoke) then don't waste anyone's time. Clearly no New Orleanians were selected when the competition was formulated. But did I mention that Brad Pitt was involved?

And who the hell is "myself" and why should we care: "The idea for the competition developed from a conversation between Brad Pitt and myself at the Clinton Global Initiative meeting in New York City in September 2005."

Ohh...by the way - this above, is just a paste and cut from the email they sent out.

Obviously, one may assume that they will (have to) extend the registration date in order to get more entries (especially with the $100 reg. fee)

I totally hear you Cameron (and others). Your concerns are good ones.
Still undecided if to put up $100 for a cat in the box...

Any saints out there who registered and are willing to share submission requirements with the Archinect community?

Cameron:

Caught your lecture in Salt Lake City -- good stuff.

I too was questioning the value of this competition in the face of so much real need in New Orleans. My hope is that through generating these materials, it may raise the public consciousness and their support for further rebuilding. New Orleans has lost its news cycle on the national level.

Having said this, I remember that your efforts steered clear of New Orleans for a number of reasons, and that you and your Minnesota students have been active in Mississippi...

Would you care to comment as to whether it is even ethical to rebuild in New Orleans where the average elevation is 6'+/- below sea level? According to Global Green, 2/3 of New Orleans residents were displaced by Katrina. And while insuring that any new construction is sustainable is indeed noble, I find myself questioning if rebuilding to accomodate the displaced is even well-founded in the first place.

I'm not trying to prompt a loaded response, I'm just curious...

$100 per registrant or $100 per team? What if you are a student with a mix of professionals and students on your team? $25? $125?

It sounds like it's an exciting jury. Maybe too exciting for achieving anything, but who knows what a state can do when it's being lobbied by hollywood stars. If it works the same way as the Las Vegas casinos, maybe something will get built in the end... Actually, is this Brad Pitt/ Clooney casino story over?

i am interested in this comp. and have registered, because i need something fun to work on , while being a little bored at work. plus i could easily spend 100 bucks on beer, so i figure this is money better spent. if people are whining about 100 dollar registration fees , think about what you would probably be spending taht money on, especially while filling the tank in your SUV.

OK, so as it turns out, I'm not going to do it. It's due on July 6th! That's only a month. I mean I appreciate their sense of urgency but these requirements seemed a lot more detailed than the Arch. Record competition back in March and we had more time to do that one. Plus I don't have anyone to help me this time around. Unfortunately, as much as I want to meet Brad and Thom and the rest of the merry bunch, I just don't have the time.

I paid my $100 dollars yesterday and still haven't received my password or confirmation email! I actually wanted to start the competition this weekend, total BS. Has anyone else had this problem?

One month is a short time, but honestly how much time do you need? We always sit around and finally go into full gear with two weeks left, no matter how much time you have before a deadline. I think I like the idea of the short timeframe, it will be a really intense month of work, then it will be over.

The National Building Museum would be a great venue for the work to be exhibited. Alas, the submission deadline is too quick for me, I'm out.

The Today show gave a surprising amount of coverage to the competition this morning, talking with Brad Pitt about green design (and fatherhood!). The best part was when they announced that you could view the finalists EXCLUSIVELY on their website: "eco designs", anyone?

Lesson learned: have a green design prototype ready at all times in case of hot shot competitions such as this.

OK I just happened to see Brad Pitt on the Today show again this morning - apparently he's on all week talking about the New Orleans competition. I'll post more of my thoughts on what it's like watching Brad Pitt talk about the influence of traditional shotgun houses on a sustainable contemporary project (whew.....) over on Thread Central.

Here, I want to say this: I don't see how anyone can argue at this point that Brad Pitt's involvement in architecture can be anything but good for the discipline. When else would we see the Today show devote prime morning time to an architecture competition? One that has sustainable building practices at it's core? How many people just heard Brad Pitt say "Why can't a building create more energy than it consumes?" and why wouldn't they take that idea into their conciousness.

Good for Brad championing this project.
