cowgill you seem to be taking over for garpike, who was doing our silly but interesting calculations for us while he was laid up with his broken leg. Thank you.

As for me, I'm off alcohol for awhile after a disastrous evening with Limoncella martinis on my trip to Phoenix. Vodka is not my friend. Especially flavored crap. Blech. A martini should be gin - gin only, just wave the open vermouth bottle over the glass for a minute and toss in an olive.

WonderK I'm thinkin' you need some girl friends. Wish I was closer. 'Specially since I'm giving up alcohol for awhile.

Hoegarrden has gone downhill. It used to be independant, then Interbrew bought the label and started exporting it to America. The quality isn't what it used to be. On that same note, outside of Ireland Guinness just isn't a Guinness. Didn't stop me from having about 15 pints last Friday.

On Saturday I sobered up with a 6 pack of the PBR....it's known the world over.

cowgill, I've had 15 of them, I think, including the 25% stout.

All but the winter lager either suck or are decent-but-fairly-run-of-the-mill

every last one of them is way, way overpriced.

stouts over ~15% just taste like syrup - they have to add an insane amount of sugar to compensate for the bitterness. even the dogfish head (best brewery ever?) 23% stout, while amazing, was just too syrupy to be enjoyable for more than a sip or two.

now the dogfish head 21% IPA, on the otherhand, is pure heaven.

dammit now I want a beer.

it's a special sam adams "extreme beer"

http://www.ananova.com/news/story/sm_1502257.html

and it's no where near worth the $90 a bunch of us paid for a 24 oz bottle.

think cognac mixed with vanilla coke and a slight hoppiness. virtually no head.

the 23% dogfish head stout is similar, but way, way better, and it's only $10 for a 12 oz.

but if I'm going to spend $10 on a bottle of beer, I'm going to get the dogfish head 21% IPA every time...it's AMAZING.

yeah, DFH makes 4 IPAs as well as their standard pale ale.

The standard pale ale is decent, but slightly overpriced for what it is.

the 60 minute IPA (6%, I think) is an above average IPA, but there are a couple others that are better at the same price (~$8 a sixer)

The 90 minute IPA (9%) is one of my all-time favorite beers. it's expensive enough that I don't buy it too often ($9.50/4 pack), but when you start getting into crazy beers, it's actually a really, really good buy.

The 120 minute IPA (21%) is a bit insane, but it's amazing. because of it's high alc. content, it isn't available in some states (here in NC we can buy 151 but not a 21% beer, hrumph) whole foods usually carries it in the states that allow it.

it hits you FAST - it is deceptively easy to drink

next time I go visit the folks, I'm going to call the distributor and see if I can get a case to age.

e: I didn't realize that the worldwide stout had dropped to 18%. I will have to try it again - the 23% was way too sticky-sweet.

I like *some* of the esoteric belgian beers, but to me a great number of them taste like someone spilled a bottle of chanel No. 5 in the vat - They tend to be a bit flower-y/perfume-y for me.

but maybe I just ate too many flowers as a kid.

i believe the term that applies to belgian beers is "fruity esters" -don't like 'em. i had a dogfish head in nc last september while on vacation in asheville. the state had just legalized the higher alcohol content beers (high-gravity?). however, the serving was 6 oz.

point defiance and boundary bay ipa's are currently on the top of my list. i don't know if you can get them outside of the pac nw.

well, this thread made me take a little shopping trip yesterday. my booty:

1 4 pack DFH 90 minute IPA, it's been a while and I missed it.

1 750ml rogue imperial IPA, 9.5%

1 flying dog mix pack. includes the pale ale, Hefeweizen, Amber lager, and IPA (had the IPA before, good for the price)

so far I've just cracked the FD hefeweizen. it's ok, if a little weak and a little too sugary. it's definitely nowhere near Hacker-Pschorr. it'd be a good deal at around $6.50-$7 /6

tonight I'm making thai penut chicken to go with the DFH or rogue (I haven't decided yet)
