okay the recent natural disaster in new orleans and its surrounds has got me wondering about the need for disaster preparedness. for those living in large metro areas that may be more vulnerable to disasters such as hurricanes, tsunamis, earthquakes and terrorist attacks i would suggest you start stockpiling. from recent events we see that it may take almost a week for help to arrive for those who are caught in the chaos of such an event and so it probably makes sense to have at least a weeks worth of provisions on hand.
here's my list so far:

bottled water
canned food
energy bars
heavy duty flashlight and many batteries
waterproof matches
flares
candles
bunsen burner
propane
sleeping bags
garbage bags(wear em like a pancho to prevent hypothermia)
tent
always have at least a weeks worth of
any prescription medication
boots
raingear
bandages
pain reliever
hammer
crowbar
extra gas if possible
a swiss army knife
a shotgun and shells
cash money

here's hoping u never have to use them

This is a better flashlight than one that needs batteries. There are several similar on the market (Sharper Image, etc.). You charge it by shaking it back and forth.

They make great gofts for gearheads!

Frozen water is safe water - no bacteria or toxins. Ice can be melted for drinking.

Any food that is still salvageable can be kept cool until it can be consumed.

Ice is also helpful for wounds.

hauling ice water has got to be the least energy wise way to get water to people down there.

First the energy needed to freeze it, then to ship expanded water, and then to keep it frozen. Why cant we get bottled water to people.

and why would those poeple need ice boxes at this time? to keep their filet mignons cool? Millitary rations, canned food, baby formula dont need refrigeration.

and electricity is out down there.

Frozen water is not safe water -- when you travel to 3rd world countries they always say don't drink bottled water/coke/juice with ice in it.

Hmmmmmm, anti, you're absolutely right - and yet I read on a "home emergency preparedness" website that after an emergency you should rely on melted ice for drinking water because you know it's safe.

The mystery deepens...

I believe they need ice because they don't have air-conditioning (no electricity in many areas). The South is too hot especially for the aging.

ice water is not necessaery safe water.

personal experience: a week spent on the red sea, egypt, first day i drank water with ice, i had diarrhea for the entire week. my girlfriend drank only canned soda and she was fine.
even the receptionist said that i had been a fool to have ice in my drink. nobody had ice, apart tourists.

Snippet of Dialogue From PANIC IN THE YEAR ZERO:

Harry: Look sweetheart, for the next few weeks survival is going
to have to be on an individual level.
Ann: What do you want to do, write off the rest of the world?
Harry: When civilization gets civilized again, I'll rejoin.
