The only thing that makes Osama more particularly heinous and immoral than any other leader who believes in using violence to achieve his political goals is that Osama sees nothing wrong with attacking unarmed civilians.

While that difference goes far beyond the line of what most Americans, including myself, consider moral behavior, I don't necessarily think residents of the third world come from cultures where that distinction is so clearly drawn.

This is not to say that those views should be condoned to the point where it leaves us vulnerable to future attacks. But the only way to neutralize those views is to make the guy in the Osama t-shirt and everyone like him feel that the US is doing a better job looking out for his needs and interests than Osama.

If the US does a good job in the relief effort and is seen by the victims and the rest of the international community as generous and adequate, it will go a long way toward achieving those ends.

Definitely a Photoshop job - check the glow around the image:

A pathetic attempt to direct anger toward a region that is already struggling.

the Canadian government decided to donate on my behalf...WITH MY FUCKING TAX MONEY!

shit, it seems as though the strain on the system (when we let some of these "refugee's" in) will not be enough....so they donate another 40million.

let's just say that the homeless Canadian citizen, who died around the corner from my house last thursday (from the freezing cold) could have used a little of that...and maybe he'd still be alive.

Now that's a government who looks after their own!

So, we can essentially buy our way out of future attacks? So this recent humanitarian effort can eclipse our foreign policy atrocities on which the anti U.S. sentiment is predicated? To change the minds of those so srongly convicted against us seems dubious. Afterall, when we are done buying respect, aren't we the same terrible americans as on 9/10/2001?

Other than either complete acquiesence to the demands of the terrorists or handing the reins of being the world's superpower over to another nation, I don't see how any way we try to solve the problem will not involve buying our way out, one way or the other.

So, then...we've been extorted, esentially.

I have a whole colletion of images from the media that are photoshopped. Its actually quite a frighting phenomenon the way images are used and twisted... Its seems these tatics work better than twisting words.

this may not be the right place...

but does it bother anyone that in the aftermath of this, the amount of people saying had there been a warning system in place, the deathtoll wouldn't be so high? being the last tsunami in the indian ocean was 1880-something, wouldn't that money have been better off somewhere else, say education or transportation? would it be similar to placing a volcano alert system on the east coast? the affected areas seem mostly third-world anyway. is the only way to get a warning system installed, then, to bring them out of their third-world status?

archangel and others,

this is a pic from india and hence i will voice my opinion -

please do not get all flared up on seeing such images - i have never, since the past 12-13 years that the world knows Osama bin laden seen a t-shirt of him being worn around. Such images cater to the volatile sensibilities that we have seemed to develop in the wake of all recent world events. and let me ask you, what the fuck do you mean by donating 20 bucks and buying the guy a polo (even if the t-shirt was an osama bin laden t-shirt)????
did you donate even a single dollar to any of the relief efforts? maybe you should before you look at such stupid trivial things in this landscape of destruction and poverty.

Same..
I think you need to read archangel's original post. He/She said they did donate 20 dollars to the relief effort, then had second thoughts about helping out after seeing the guys shirt. The posts above show that the image was photoshoped in ( which is quite disturbing I might add) and as bryan mentioned lending a little humanitarian aid can only help. However, charity is just that...don't bite the hand that is feeding you. This disaster is obviously a global problem. We all should be helping regardless of our political beliefs.

I wonder how many photoshoped images in the media are taken as fact?

freelsk,

here is one of my favorites. it's from the chicago tribune and the news was this white sox fan charged the first base coach from the opposing team. a knife was found on the field and it was assumed it was the from the fan and his son. the interesting thing about this picture is that a knife seems to be falling out of the guys pocket...

the original picture's from sri lanka.
aside from it's total implausaibility, the photoshop job is terrible. i'm shocked and hurt. you can joke all you want but i hope you realize how demeaning lies like these can be.
like all racists, you're the kind of idiot who's directing hatred towards people who've faced more violence, even more islamic terrorism, than you can imagine. a true racist. these are poor, humble societies which preach non-violence and religious tolerance and this is what you say of them.
i hope archinect deletes this garbage. what more can i say?

Although I think the image is a fake, even if he was wearing an Osama shirt, does it really matter? Many people in developing nations don't have the luxury of a huge wardrobe, and they wear whatever they can get their hands on, whether it be used American T-shirts or anti-American T-shirts. If your whole life got turned upside down, I think the last thing you'd think about is what kind of message you are sending with your T-shirt. What's more disturbing is that this image, whether real or fake, is being used to stir up sentiments to prevent Americans from helping out.
