Architect/Artisan Teams

NoNameNum3

So...I am currently doing some research into Architect/Artisan teams and I am having trouble finding pairings that actually fulfill my requirements and fit into my vein of study. I was hoping that people might be able to recommend some possible leads for me.

I first need to mention that I am interested in Artisan's who are primarily fabricators or craftsman as opposed to artists (So no Ned Kahn facades or Oldenburg/Gehry type teams). I guess the argument I am trying to formulate revolves around the nature of collaboration in architecture as it pertains to controlling the outcome of a project. I hope to find architect/artisan teams in which the architect willingly gives up some measure of control to the fabricator, resulting in something unexpected.

So you can see my problem, most of the firms I know of that work closely with fabricators tend to be work under a hierarchical model. Even people like Zahner tend to try to realize the architectural forms handed to them.

If anyone out there knows of a firm or fabricator or team that might be inline with my goals, could you give me a heads up? Also, as one more difficulty to add to the list, I was hoping for teams based in California so I can actually get out to see the projects and also get into the firms and actually talk to the key players face to face. However, I can possibly get anywhere along the Northwestern Coast.

So...any leads?

I dont know what you need this info for, or what your thesis is, but you may want to also look at where these architects/artists practice, and how their locale affect the craft of their work (critical regionalism, if you will).

for example, the Pacific Northwest has a rich logging/ship building culture, and therefore has many people/companies that do great metal work and woodwork

Southern California has a great number of aerospace companies that can do carbonfiber/aluminium/titanium/etc. This technology and experience has been co-opted by the architects in this area..
