Vertebrae is a kit of parts -- a system -- that allows the construction of muliti-scale objects that modify the spaces they inhabit. This modification is functional and poetic. B+H's piece, while sculptural in form, proposes areas to rest and sit while defining separate spaces within a room. The segments of Vertebrae are constructed of Dupont Corian Illumination Series, with embedded lights; creating a soft diffuse glow that appears to emanate from within.

Vertebrae
The form was derived using 3D digital tools in an iterative process that allowed successive studies of various forms. The primary tool was a lofting program that generated forms from just a few "stations". These stations became ergonomic target points to create the desired functionality and poetry in an otherwise amorphous form. The end shapes are generated by taking snapshots of an animation of the shapes morphing along a trajectory. These resulting digital shapes, or segments, are fed directly into the software for a 3-axis milling machine for fabrication. Each shape is attached to the next using a flexible joint creating the curvaceous, segmented form. This technique yields a very intuitive process that allows infinite possibilities. Vertebrae will ultimately be used to generate a variety of architectural accessories.
