Located in the scenic beauty of New Canaan, CT, an area dotted with old colonial-era farms and modern architectural masterpieces, this guest house is a contemporary twist on traditional English threshing barns, with a bright, airy interior and an intimate connection with the outdoors. The owners, avid chefs and art collectors, desired a space to exhibit their collection and in which to entertain.

The original barn located on the property was built in the 1870s and collapsed in a snow storm in the winter of 2010. Instead of simply rebuilding the previous structure, the family applied for a permit to rebuild the structure with a new use, a guest house. Zoning dictated that the new structure conform to the former shell of the original nineteenth-century barn.The proposed guest house accomadates approximately 3,370 SF of sleeping areas, living spaces, garage, and workshop.

WXY opens beachfront community center for Rockaway, Queens

WXY Architecture + Urban Design has opened its new Arverne East Nature Preserve and Welcome Center in the Rockaway neighborhood of Queens.

The project forms the first phase of New York City’s first net-zero residential community with 1,650 new units. It was realized at 6,000 square feet and includes a community meeting room and space for the Parks and Recreation Department's Urban Park Rangers program and The Campaign Against Hunger.

These three shortlisted adaptive-reuse proposals will vie for the 2024 Davidson Prize

The shortlist finalists for the 2024 Davidson Prize have been announced as part of the annual contest’s third edition, whose theme is 'Rethinking Home — Adapt and Reuse.'

The field that was selected from the proposals included in this month’s longlist announcement were each asked to develop ideas for new homes made from recycled materials or using retrofitting methods on existing structures. Each finalist will receive honorariums worth a total of £5,000 ($8,160 USD) each to develop their proposals further toward the £10,000 ($12,500) final prize.

New European Bauhaus Academy launches skills training network

The New European Bauhaus Academy has launched a learning initiative called NEBA Alliance, a network of skills training hubs across the European Union meant to accelerate “up- and re-skilling” activities for workers in the AEC fields and adjacent professional industries. The news was shared via a press release earlier this month that included statements from European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, who announced the formation of the NEB Academy in November 2022.

Fourteen partners from industry and higher education have signed up to support the effort, which is meant to enable the 160,000 new jobs that are being added to the building sector as part of an inbound "Renovation Wave" in Europe.

Twelve superlative projects earn RAIC National Urban Design Award honors for 2024

The 2024 recipients of the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada (RAIC)’s National Urban Design Awards have been announced. They include twelve new projects in six provinces, each with a marked ability to advance the discipline and improve the quality of life for a broad range of Canadian communities, both large and small.

The bi-annual honors are presented in unison with the Canadian Institute of Planners (CIP) and the Canadian Society of Landscape Architects (CSLA).

The Awards jury stated: "The submissions were consistently very high quality, and focused on many of the topics we as designers are all focusing on in our ever-changing world — justice, equity, diversity and inclusion, on climate change, on resiliency and as always — on high quality design for the many end users we strive to serve."

The news came last week (April 17th) after UK Housing and Communities Secretary Michael Gove remanded an Article 31 order calling on the local committee to pause its process in light of pushbacks against the planned demolition of the existing Bastion House and the former Museum of London that is an integral part of the scheme.

This 4,500sf home was designed and built by Disbrow Iannuzzi. The composition of timber structure, walls, and stone is organized under a rectangular wooden ceiling plane. The house was built using shop fabricated structural insulated panels supported on post and beam glulam timbers. Building materials were chosen to be responsible and durable. The slate sculpings, a waste stream product of the slate roofing tile industry, wooden rainscreen and zinc roof were selected for sustainability and longevity.

A lightweight university study centre designed to be easily disassembled has won the prize for the best building in Europe. Longevity, permanence and a sense of immutability might be the ambition of most architects, but Gustav Düsing and Max Hacke would be delighted to see their building adapted and reconfigured, or ultimately dismantled and moved somewhere else altogether.

Wainwright reflects on the "impossibly slender" pavilion which was revealed as the winner of the 2024 EU Mies van der Rohe Award last week in an article that also includes the perspectives of the pavilion's architects, Gustav Düsing and Max Hacke.

Located on the campus of the Technical University of Braunschweig, Germany, the pavilion has been designed to allow for variations of student activities within a flexible layout, described by the award organizers as a "counter-model to spaces of hierarchical knowledge transfer."

Another winning aspect is the hybrid structure's ability to be disassembled and remounted. Individual components are capable of reuse in line with a principle called the "future material depot," which contributes to its role in the circular economy.

A group of investors led by a Dubai-based real estate developer is in talks to build a mixed-use tower in Thailand that may vie for the title of the world’s tallest building, according to Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin.

Thailand's prime minister met with a group of Middle Eastern and Chinese companies to discuss the plan. Among the groups consulted was Emaar, developers of the Burj Khalifa in Dubai, currently the world's tallest tower.

As of 2024, the tallest building in Thailand is the Magnolias Waterfront Residences Iconsiam in Bangkok, measuring 70 stories and 1,043 feet tall. Meanwhile, it was reported last month by the UK's Architect's Journal that Foster + Partners was designing another scheme which would become the world's tallest building: a 1.2-mile-high skyscraper in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

Rather than presenting itself as a completed work, it embraces its role as a phase within an ongoing process. Each element, whether rough or refined, old or new, is equally valued, and gains relevance through processing, assembly, and the possibility of continuous adaptation.

Originally constructed in 1951, the single-family house epitomized the post-war residential style prevalent at the time. It appeared archetypically as a Danish house is imagined: a two-story cubic box with evenly distributed windows, red brick façade, and a gable roof. Despite its structural robustness, its adaptability to ever-changing ways of living and working was limited. By employing traditional architectural techniques like exposing, covering, cutting, joining, stacking, and casting, the inherent rigidity of the original composition is dissolved.

Dubai floats plan for new 400-gate airport terminal, the world's largest

A design for what will become the world’s new largest-capacity airport terminal has been announced for Dubai by the Emirati leader Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum. Al Jazeera and other international outlets are reporting on the planned $35 billion development, which will take shape at the existing Al Maktoum International Airport with 400 total gates, five parallel runways, and a capacity for 260 million annual travelers — five times the size of Dubai's current international airport, according to the announcement.

The reopening returns a certain architectural equilibrium to Johnson’s estate. The original paired structures, said Kirsten Reoch, who was named executive director of the Glass House campus last summer, “are two parts of a whole. Neither was conceived without the other. The Glass House is celebrating its 75th anniversary this year with a special Paper Log House installation from Shigeru Ban and other public programs through the end of December. Federal 2007 ban on fossil fuels in government-owned buildings finally kicks in

Fossil fuels will be banned from new and remodeled federal buildings under a rule finalized by the Department of Energy this week. The rule stems from the Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007 (EISA). Section 433 of that law says new federal buildings and those undergoing major renovations have to phase out "fossil fuel-generated energy consumption" by 2030. But that provision never went into effect because the Energy Department failed to finalize regulations, until now.

All buildings (and vehicles) owned by the U.S. Government are currently under mandate to run on renewable energy by 2050. The EISA mandate was not fully effected until now because the DoE never finalized its regulations, NPR reported a year ago.

Now, the enactment will save an estimated 2 million metric tons of carbon emissions and another 16,000 tons of methane emissions within three decades. That's equal to 4.92 billion kWh of electricity (enough to power a city the size of San Diego for a year) according to standard conversions.

Snøhetta's high-tech Vertikal Nydalen mixed-use project opens in Oslo

A new mixed-use project in Oslo from Snøhetta has been completed following a nine-year design and development phase that culminated in 118,400 square feet and 18 floors with restaurants, an office component, and 40 apartment units all built in.

Vertikal Nydalen is the focal point of a new town square in the Norwegian capital and features a self-sufficient climate system bolstered by PV panels, geo-wells, heat pumps, and an advanced building monitoring system that allows user feedback to inform its controls.

The project was born out of a pilot program that combined two research efforts supported by the Research Council of Norway. It focused on enhancing the building’s ventilation strategy and helping its heating/cooling systems run with little added energy at an efficiency rate of up to 2.5 times the industry’s current leading standard.

Plans for world’s tallest residential tower unveiled in Dubai

Hospitality brand Six Senses has unveiled plans for a new residential tower in Dubai Marina, set to be the world’s tallest. Sprouting up in Dubai Marina, the Six Senses Residences will be the second Dubai location to come from Six Senses, joining the nearly-opened Six Senses The Palm Jumeirah hotel. The tower is said to boast an impressive 122 floors, when it is eventually completed in 2028.

The height of the new Six Senses Residences Dubai Marina tower is equal to the under-construction Burj Azizi tower nearby, a $1.5 billion commercial project that was announced to have broken ground in January and will be completed the same year.

They will become two of the world’s six 120+ story structures. Reported amenities include a 109th-floor lap pool and cryotherapy chambers, crystal sound healing room, movie theater, and spa.

Despite the size, only 251 high-end residences are included. The current record-holder for tallest residential building, Adrian Smith + Gordon Gill Architecture's Central Park Tower in New York City, has 179 units over 131 floors.

The 2024 Spring Show exhibition, curated by Fiction and Entertainment program faculty Alexey Marfin, opens tomorrow, April 27, and will be open to the public until May 6.
Class of 1995 alum Gordon Kipping presents Maison de Cartes, which runs through June 2.
