Architecture Faculty - Kendall College of Art and Design of Ferris State University (KCAD) is currently accepting applications for an Assistant Professor of Architecture (Term appointment, non-tenure-track) to teach in its Master of Architecture program.  KCAD prepares artists and designers to have an impact through practice. Full-time, term-appointment faculty members teach 18 semester credit hours per academic year, and engage in three kinds of professional development: continuous improvement in teaching effectiveness, creative and/or scholarly work, and service. KCAD faculty also advise students regarding their academic plan and progress as well as their co-curricular and post-graduation opportunities.

The KCAD M.Arch was established in 2014 and achieved NAAB accreditation in 2019. Situated within an art and design college, and located in the center of Grand Rapids, MI, the program emphasizes architecture’s cultural significance and values interdisciplinary connections and community engagement. Its curriculum is structured around a unique sequence of immersive seminars paired with design studios. The program is seeking a term-appointment full-time faculty member with a strong, demonstrated ability as a design studio instructor, and with the expertise to teach courses in other parts of the curriculum such as design representation, environmental systems, and/or thesis research. The term of the appointment is for the 2024-2025 academic year, with the possibility of renewal. Courses are to be taught in person on KCAD’s campus in Grand Rapids, MI. The candidate(s) selected for the position must reside in Michigan after acceptance of employment.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Participate in program and curriculum development and assessment
  • Prepare and distribute syllabi according to college standards
  • Teach an appropriate course load as assigned
  • Assess and evaluate student learning and provide formative feedback throughout the course
  • Keep regular posted office hours
  • Advise students for academic and professional development
  • Participate in service to the college and in shared governance
  • Participate in academic functions including commencement
  • Contribute to the college’s continuous improvement
  • Demonstrate an understanding of diversity, equity and inclusion, especially in working relationships with students, faculty, staff and community members.
  • Maintain effective communication with students and colleagues
  • Work collaboratively with faculty, students and staff throughout the college
  • Contribute to your discipline’s discourse(s)
  • Engage in scholarly, creative and professional development
  • Engage in reflective self-assessment for improvement, renewal and promotion
  • Perform any other duties assigned within the position classification area

Required Education:

  • Master of Architecture degree from a NAAB-accredited (or recognized equivalent) college or university

Required Work Experience:

  • Experience teaching (beyond Graduate Assistant/Teaching Assistant) in a NAAB-accredited architecture program
  • Professional architectural practice experience

Required Skills and Abilities:

  • Demonstrated proficiency in architectural design
  • Demonstrated proficiency in current architectural presentation techniques
  • Demonstrated visual, written and verbal communication skills
  • Demonstrated commitment, experience and understanding for diversity, equity and inclusion

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Three years teaching experience (beyond Graduate Assistant/Teaching Assistant) in a NAAB-accredited architecture program
  • Post-professional master’s degree or Ph.D. in architecture or a closely related field
  • U.S. architectural license
  • Three years of professional architectural practice experience
  • Architectural curriculum development experience
  • Research and teaching focus related to design representation, environmental systems, and/or thesis research
